CUCosta rejects more than half of applicants
The center receives applications that double its actual admission capacity: 7,700 students

The University Center of the Coast (CUCOSTA) admits only between 39 and 45 percent of applicants each academic year. Rector María Esther Avelar confirmed this at a press conference: the unmet demand hovers around 50 percent, meaning that one out of every two applicants is turned away.
Current enrollment is 7,700 students. The center receives applications that double its actual admission capacity, but it lacks the infrastructure to accommodate them. Avelar acknowledged that they are exploring alternatives to expand enrollment, including converting some programs to a blended learning format.
The problem is not new. The rector admitted that one of the priority projects is the construction of a new building, with an initial investment estimated at 70 million pesos, precisely to address this backlog of applications. However, the project has neither a confirmed start date nor an approved budget.

What will happen in the short term is the opposite: CUCosta will cede four hectares of its facilities for the development of the teaching hospital, which means handing over the center's newest classrooms. Before expanding, the center is reducing its available space.
The rector did not explain how this contradiction will be resolved, nor how many more academic years half of the region's demand for higher education will go unmet.
