Municipal agencies and emergency services participated in a preventative exercise for a hypothetical earthquake and tsunami
With the activation of alarms and emergency protocols, on May 6, the Municipal Government participated in the Jalisco 2026 Earthquake Drill. The scenario involved an 8.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chamela and the possible formation of a tsunami.
Evacuations began at 11:00 a.m. at City Hall, the Municipal Administrative Unit (UMA), UNIRSE (a community center), COMUDE (Municipal Sports Commission), IMSS Clinic 170, and the Naval Museum, where workers and citizens evacuated the buildings in an orderly fashion.
According to the preliminary report, approximately 1,253 people were evacuated from various public buildings and agencies throughout the city.
Simultaneously, members of the State Civil Protection agency and the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department coordinated preventative drills with support from the Navy, the Army, and the National Guard in the city center and areas near the sea.
Later, the groups were moved to the La Bobadilla sports complex, which had been designated as a safe zone. There, the director of the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department stated that these drills strengthen a culture of prevention and help prepare the population for any emergency.
