PV will held MAREJADA 2026: a meeting for critical dialogue and artistic production
Events will take place on May 7th and 8th with different activities in various cultural spaces through the city
The University of Guadalajara, through its University Center of the Coast, presents the fourth edition of MAREJADA, the International Congress of Visual Arts, an event that has established itself as a space where art is reflected upon, discussed, and connected to contemporary issues.
MAREJADA will take place on May 7 and 8, 2026, at the University Center of the Coast in Puerto Vallarta, extending its activities to various cultural spaces throughout the city and strengthening the bond between the university community and its surroundings.
In 2026, MAREJADA addresses the theme of “Art and Nation-States,” opening a conversation about the relationship between artistic production and political, social, and cultural structures.
This edition proposes to question how concepts such as nation, territory, identity, and power influence—and are reinterpreted—in contemporary artistic practices. From diverse perspectives, the congress will address topics such as cultural policies, resistance processes, decolonial practices, and the symbolic construction of identities, creating a space for critical analysis as well as creative exchange.
The program brings together prominent figures from the artistic and academic fields, including Daniel Montero (Colombia), Demián Flores, and Lorena Peña Brito, who will deliver keynote addresses.
They will be joined by Miriam Rodríguez and Yutsil Cruz on the panel “Territory, Identity, and State: Art in Expansion,” along with artist César Girón. In addition, there will be 24 presentations from various institutions across the country, organized into working groups that address themes such as art and identity, institutions and power, decolonial practices, and body, territory, and memory.
There will also be workshops led by artists from Puerto Vallarta, such as Maritza Guadalupe Martínez Vargas, Valeria Luna, Ubaldo Sebastián Flores Guerrero, and Rafael Salcedo, integrating local voices into a conversation of international scope.
The congress's artistic program features exhibitions such as "Dialogues Between Foam and Asphalt: University Printmaking Encounter 2026," showcasing work by students from CUAAD and the University Center of the Coast, as well as "Zitakua – Malagua: Emerging Prints" at the Omar Alonso Gallery, further establishing spaces for the exhibition of contemporary printmaking.
