Fire control continues at municipal landfill
Authorities are maintaining a coordinated operation to prevent the fire from spreading and to minimize its impact on the population
This Friday, efforts to combat and control the fire at the "Los Gavilanes" landfill in Puerto Vallarta continue. Participating in the operation are personnel from the Jalisco State Civil Protection and Fire Department, Civil Protection and Fire Departments from Puerto Vallarta, Cabo Corrientes, and Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit, as well as staff from various departments of the Puerto Vallarta City Council.
Additionally, since yesterday, the Witari helicopter has been providing aerial support, dropping water on strategic points to reinforce fire suppression efforts.

The primary objective is to control the spread of the fire both within and around the landfill, thereby minimizing its impact on air quality. As part of the implemented tactics, continuous cooling operations are being carried out using water pumps and tankers, alternating with the application of soil and solid material to smother hotspots and reduce the fire's intensity. Additionally, assessment overflights and aerial water drops are being conducted to suppress secondary fires.
The intervention strategies focus on breaking up the combustible material—primarily municipal solid waste—and reducing the temperature through the coordinated use of water and heavy machinery. Simultaneously, brigades are working on the perimeter of the landfill to contain and extinguish secondary fires, preventing the fire from reaching adjacent vegetation.
Currently, the firefighting force consists of 66 personnel from agencies at all three levels of government, supported by 31 vehicles and specialized equipment.
Authorities are maintaining constant monitoring of the area and will continue working to achieve full control and subsequent extinguishment of the fire.
